I had a great time with Hannah, Kyle and Tug’s photography session. Most of the time I get to hear about the sessions, but it’s fairly rare that I get to enjoy them too. And Tug is such a delightful little guy.
Tug was absolutely a joy to work with. We took pictures for almost two hours, and he was happy and playful. And such a cutie.
Hannah and Kyle are friends of ours, so we didn’t have to work through the usual nervousness that we have to overcome with new clients, but it got me thinking about how stressful the first session with a new (to you) photographer can be.
First sessions can start a little awkwardly if you haven’t met your photographer beforehand. You step into a darkened studio from a bright sunny day and your eyes blink to adjust to the light. There are pictures on the walls, a couch in the corner.
What you need to remember is that although this may be your first photography session in ages – it’s not your photographer’s. You might just be their first today… but they’re a professional. Don’t worry about your children being withdrawn – a good photographer can draw them out.
And, as uncouth as it may be for me to suggest, just relax. If you’re uncomfortable your children will be too. Have a cup of coffee, or tea, and settle in. Sometimes the best pictures are in the first five minutes, sometimes they’re in the last.
Always come prepared to have your picture taken too. Frequently we use a parent in the frame to coax in a reluctant child. If we get a great picture of you and your little one – even if that isn’t what we’re aiming for that day, you don’t want to be chagrined that you were wearing your sweatpants.
When a child is frustrated and doesn’t want to be involved, we usually put away the camera and just relax for a moment – especially if it’s still early in the session. We can always reschedule, but we’re willing to give your child the time he needs to reorient himself. The best thing a parent can do is just try to relax
and remember that we’re not paid by the hour.
See you soon.
