High School Senior Portraits

Jake ~ Jefferson High School 2010

Jake and his mom came to me with a very specific idea of what they wanted for his unique senior portraits. Jake has always played sports, and both football and baseball had been a huge part of his his school career. His plan for the future- to become a physical trainer and possibly a fitness model. When Jake came into the studio and said he was looking for something like the old Nike and Gatorade commercials, I jumped at the chance.

As a photographer I love nothing more that helping people create a one-of-a-kind image. Being asked to create you run of the mill senior photo drives me nuts.

Seniors are never happy with boring and neither am I. Grandma, however, is thrilled.

I pride myself on being able to create almost any kind of image the senior wants. Basically what you want is what you get.

Such is the case with Jake’s photos.

For you camera geeks out there the set up was pretty straight forward.  I’ve got a red gel on a light coming in from the upper right hand corner of the image. This is to give a red tint to the smoke coming from the smoke machine I had Jake’s mom waiving around.

Just remember when using a smoke machine in a studio, you’ve got to fire shots in short bursts. If you just let it rip your studio will like Seattle in the winter time. Hard to get the shot when you’re shooting through a blanket of fog. The other two lights in the photo are a large soft box and a strip light on the sides to create a rim light around Jake. There it is- simple, effective and fun.

Next week I’ll introduce you to Aubrey and I’ll teach you how to create a custom background like the one I created for her Senior Session.

Have a great Fourth of July and remember Stop. Drop and Roll won’t work if you’re covered in Bacardi 151. Be safe, have fun and don’t blow off your fingers.
