Last year we found the perfect Santa Claus, and, instead of letting him get away , we’ve already booked him for this year. Your $25 mini sessions are available on December 3rd, and we are booking them now on a first come – first serve basis. Not your average mall Santa, this is where to get pictures with Santa Claus. Our Santa is the real deal, as a graduate of Santa College, our Santa comes with enough Yuletide knowledge to make a believer out of even the biggest Grinch. Your private session will allow your child backstage access to the big guy himself. Santa is extremely busy during the Christmas season with Tree Lightings, Food Basket Deliveries, and special sessions, so we are all incredibly lucky to have him. Up on the rooftop click, click, click Troutman Photography’s done the trick Talked to a lawyer and an agent named Vic And signed us a contract with Old Saint Nick He’s gonna pose for pictures with your girls and boys Sit on his lap and talk about toys Pull his beard and ask him questions In your 20 minute mini photo session Schedule Now!!! *** And we do pet pictures with Santa too! [...]

Kids are more in touch with the emotional side of their brains then we are and they really pick up on the emotions around them. So if mom or dad is in high gear with huge expectations of the images they want from their child, they are going to set themselves (and me) up for failure. Children know when you are expecting them to perform and they feel your tension when they dig don’t live up to your expectations.

This session was so much fun! How many of you out there remember Evil Knievel? I know I’m showing my age with that question but he serves as a perfect example for this week’s blog. I remember watching him soar thought the air with his cape blowing in the breeze as he gracefully flew over a bunch of cars. I also remember watching his video footage in slow motion and plain as day you could see the guys ear to ear grin even though he was wearing a helmet. He was totally absorbed in the moment and loving every heart pounding second of it. The Buddhist call that Zen, some say it’s nirvana, but whatever you call it…it’s an amazing place to be. I get that very same thrill when I photograph kids. Their temperaments run very hot and cold. One minute everything’s going great and the next they are screaming their lungs out. It seems like the smallest things can derail them emotionally. Not to be cruel but it’s that uncertainty that makes photographing children such a rush. You really are threading the eye of the needle, walking the razors edge, and possibly even gleaming the cube!? (I think [...]

Bad Photography Clients This week I had the absolute worst family in my studio. This group has been using me as a photographer for many years and I simply hate working with them. The kids don’t listen to me and they break my equipment. The mother always has a better idea of how to take the picture than I do and the father is prone to losing his cool. The family I’m talking about is my own. Ask any portrait photographer and they will all tell you that putting spoons in their eyes would be more fun than doing their own family portrait. I’ve posed large families, small families, families with lots of kids, families with pets and even posed house cats. But if I ask my 13 year old to turn her nose towards the light all hell breaks loose. I can ask a family of 5 to create a human pyramid and get the shot. But asking my own family to simply sit on a stool is somehow above and beyond. Bitter? You bet!! But this is not a blog about how much my family takes owing a studio for granted. Or how much they disrespect me and [...]
