What does a small town in Oregon, Axel Rose, and the return of the leopard print dress have in common? OK to be honest Axel Rose and leapord print have a long torrid (?) history together but let’s not go there. I was referring to the “Welcome to the Jungle Homecoming Bash” hosted by Jefferson High School last Friday night. We were invited to invade the inner sanctum of the jungle with all of our photography gear and capture the wildlife in it’s native habitat. I am now trying very hard to suppress my inner crocodile hunter by not using the word ”Crikey” in this blog. Anyway….we had a great time and got some great images. We also captured some….let’s call them unique, images that we couldn’t resists posting to Facebook. You can check them out here www.facebook.com/troutmanphoto . I have to say as far as treks through the jungle go, this one was by far my favorite. The natives were friendly, the music was good and I drank the water without getting sick. What more can you ask for? **A quick note** One of the things I love about working with Jefferson High is that the build such elaborate sets for use to use [...]

America is really a melting pot. America takes the world’s peoples and cultures and blends them into something that can only be called….American. It’s in that spirit that we Americans elected the hotdog as one of its favorite foods. Nothing says America like random bits of random animals squished up, liquefied and then cast into the shape of a German sausage. It’s this kind of meat related forward thinking that makes America the “greatest country in the world.” A title that almost went to Canada until it was discovered that Canadian bacon was actually ham. Hey Canada, when you cheat, you only cheat yourself. Anyway back to hotdogs which are not made of dogs (please don’t tell Canada). I decided it was time to add more food related images to my stock portfolio and I turned my sights on the all mighty hotdog. For those of you who aren’t regular readers of my blog (and I wouldn’t blame you if you weren’t) I shoot images for stock photography companies like istockphoto.com and Getty Images. A stock image is a generic image that publications can use to visually convey several concepts or ideas. I upload these images and they sell day [...]

Call me a tree hugger or an eco freak, but I just love windmills. There’s something about the sleek straight lines of modern windmills against rolling hills. I can’t really put it to words but windmills are cool enough for me to break my no landscape photography policy. Windmills are hypnotic enough for me to start believing I posses the necessary skills to shoot landscape photos and shoot them well. When I’m not under the influence of the mind bending power of swirling propellers I would never in a million years attempt shooting landscapes. One… because it requires skills that I generally don’t posses and two… because I find it to be boring on a level normally reserved for watching amorous flies do their thing on a bed of drying paint. Landscape photography or a colonoscopy? That question actually requires a bit of thought on my part… So you can imagine my wife’s surprise when spotting these windmills caused me to slam on the car’s breaks, veer wildly off the road all the while making noises like a drunk gorilla. I immediately disregarded the Look of Death coming from my wife’s once beautiful eyes and quickly began opening my camera [...]

It has been a blur of clients for quite some time and all I can say is… thank you all so much. In a down economy being overworked is a great problem to have! Now, having said that I’m taking this Sunday off!! No photo sessions, no viewing session or editing and absolutely no blogging. This Sunday belongs to Me, my dog a tennis ball and pint from Gilgamesh Brewing Company. http://www.facebook.com/?ref=hp#!/gilgameshbrewing I’m going to sleep late, eat pancakes and watch cartoons with my monkeys. I may even slide across the floor in my socks and undies ala Tom Cruise in Risky Business and if the neighbors are lucky I might close the blinds. (Sorry Theresa) The myriad of options when it comes to gleefully wasting the day are endless and that got me thinking. How do other people gleefully do nothing? When the cork pops and the stick comes out how do you let loose? I’d love to know. So respond to this post on my website (www.troutmanphoto.com) or Facebook http://www.facebook.com/TroutmanPhoto and let me know what you have on deck for this weekend. You get extra credit for taking pictures of you and yours doing what you do when [...]

Bad Photography Clients This week I had the absolute worst family in my studio. This group has been using me as a photographer for many years and I simply hate working with them. The kids don’t listen to me and they break my equipment. The mother always has a better idea of how to take the picture than I do and the father is prone to losing his cool. The family I’m talking about is my own. Ask any portrait photographer and they will all tell you that putting spoons in their eyes would be more fun than doing their own family portrait. I’ve posed large families, small families, families with lots of kids, families with pets and even posed house cats. But if I ask my 13 year old to turn her nose towards the light all hell breaks loose. I can ask a family of 5 to create a human pyramid and get the shot. But asking my own family to simply sit on a stool is somehow above and beyond. Bitter? You bet!! But this is not a blog about how much my family takes owing a studio for granted. Or how much they disrespect me and [...]
